Competitive 3yo Derby Trial. HAPPY VERSE stayed on to finish best of the rest behind Jan Van Goyen in the Grade 1 Cape Guineas over 1600m and on pedigree, the extra 200m should unlock further improvement. However, the same can be said of RANDOLPH HEARST and FOX ON THE RUN, who were dropped out to the rear from wide barriers that day before making up a lot of ground to finish on the heels of the runner-up. Both will be nearer the speed in a smaller field and should play leading roles. STAR MAJOR and PAY THE PALACE weren't far off and fit similar profiles, so they aren't underestimated either.
